CASTLE CONSTRUCTION - 4

The drawbridge... space

The Drawbridge is the focal point in any conflict involving a castle.

My choice was to make it simple, detachable, and barely wide enough for two riders. Note the entry is only large enough to accommodate one mounted rider. The bridge deck is composed of two spruce stringers overlain (glued) with 3/16 inch sheet balsa (scored for "planking"). A burnt umber acrylic wash was daubed on for color. The two dowels under the bridge planks are for derring-do, as Max demonstrates.

The "chains" are simple beaded brass lengths, such as a ceiling fan pull might use. The beads' weight yields a catenary shape when not under tension. Note that the chains do not run through the brass rings, as designed. Lazy me. The loose ends of the chains are secured to a string, which makes a loop, which in turn is hooked behind the battlements when the bridge is lowered. It's quicker to drape the string over the battlements rather than untie and re-tie every time. Also the chain lengths are slightly short, I need to buy more.
